Through the Lyngen Alps

The best way to land in Tromsø is by direct flight from Vienna or Munich, where your mountain guide will pick you up directly at the airport. We then reach our accommodation in Lyngseidet after a 2-hour journey.

The start of our crossing takes us from Nordkjosbotn into the mountains. The path follows a clear river course, past birch trees and mossy areas, up to the first open slopes. We walk past Storvatnet and through the Lysvassdalen valley. It gets quieter with every step, civilisation is left behind. In the evening we set up camp by Lake Gurgela - the first night in the middle of the great outdoors is imminent.

We continue to climb and reach the open plateau, where wind and clouds shape the landscape. Rugged peaks tower above us, streams cut deep lines into the rock. The path leads across boulder fields and moss cushions to a wide saddle with breathtaking views of fjords and glaciers. After around 9 hours, we reach our campsite in Elvevolldalen.

Our day's stage begins with a river crossing before we climb up again from the quiet Elvevolldalen valley and reach a lonely plateau. Between clear watercourses and rocky hills, we cross the gentle pass into Lyngsdalen. Down in the valley, we are accompanied by glacier water and the sound of rivers - a place where silence is palpable. Our destination is Lyngsdalshytta.

The day begins in the green Lyngsdalen valley, surrounded by waterfalls and snow-capped peaks. We follow old reindeer trails that take us over high plateaus to the neighbouring Kvalvikdalen valley. From there, a further ascent takes us under the steep slopes of Goalsevárri and finally on to Lyngseidet, where this long day's stage ends at the Magic Mountain Lodge.

From the Magic Mountain Lodge, the path quickly leads up the steep steps of the Lyngen Trappa over the fjord. At the top, the landscape opens up - we hike past the turquoise-blue Rottenvikvatnet and reach the tranquil Fastdalen valley.

We ascend over pathless terrain to the secluded Russedalen valley, where our next campsite lies between rocks and moss cushions. In the evening, there is only the sound of water in the air - pure wilderness.

From the campsite in Russedalen, we descend into the wide Stortinddalen valley. The valley is wild and open, framed by rugged peaks and criss-crossed by clear mountain streams. Step by step, we approach Jægervatn, whose dark blue water glistens in the sunlight.
We continue along the shore of the lake and, after a challenging river crossing, find our spot for the next night.

From the campsite at Strupskardet, the route continues. A rocky crossing with impressive views of the Lyngen Alps. The trail leads past the striking Steinfjellet and on into the wide Reinsdalen valley, where wide tundra plains and clear rivers characterise the landscape.

We cross steep slopes and reach the quiet Bjørndalen valley. Here we then climb up to Vassdalsvatnan - a group of clear mountain lakes nestled between round granite peaks. Here, on the shore of the lake, we set up our last camp - a quiet place in the middle of pure wilderness.

From the camp at Vassdalsvatnan, the trail first leads down to the small village of Storvoll, where the sea appears again. A final ascent takes us up to Hæsafjellet - a quiet summit with a panoramic view over the fjords and open sea.

From here we descend to Russelv, where the path becomes flatter and the air saltier. The path then follows the coast northwards - along rocks and heath - until we reach Lyngstuva, the northernmost point of the peninsula.

At the small lighthouse, we reach the destination of our tour - the northernmost point of the Lyngen Alps with sweeping views across the sea.

We are then picked up in Russelv and celebrate the end of our adventure with dinner at the Magic Mountain Lodge.

After breakfast we drive back to Tromsø together.
