Skitour auf den Storgalten, Lyngenalpen

Haute Route of the Lyngen Alps

Lyngen På Langs

Early in the morning, we set off from Nordkjosbotn. Our skis glide across perfect spring snow as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the peaks of the Lyngen Alps. Ahead lies seven days of ski touring, remote mountain huts and spectacular Arctic scenery. Day by day, you'll venture deeper into the wild landscapes of Northern Norway until you finally reach Lyngstuva, the northernmost point of the Lyngen Peninsula. Lyngen på langs is far more than a ski tour—it's a journey through one of Europe's most remarkable mountain regions.

Since 2013, local mountain guide Mikal Nerberg has been leading ski tourers along an extraordinary route across the Lyngen Alps—from Nordkjosbotn to the windswept headland of Lyngstuva at the northern tip of the peninsula. Over the years, he has developed and refined this ski traverse into one of Northern Norway's most impressive multi-day ski touring adventures.

The idea behind Lyngen på langs is simple yet inspiring: in seven days, we cross the entire Lyngen Peninsula on skis, experiencing the remarkable diversity of the Lyngen Alps. Vast glaciers, remote summits, long descents and breathtaking views over the fjords and the Arctic Ocean define this journey. Lyngen på langs is not a tour for those in a hurry—it's an expedition that takes you deeper into the wild landscapes of Northern Norway with every passing day. Each ascent reveals a new perspective, every descent leads into a different valley, and at the end comes the unique satisfaction of having crossed the entire mountain range under your own power.

I'm delighted to offer this exceptional ski traverse of the Lyngen Alps exclusively together with Mikal. His many years of experience on this route perfectly complement my own 15-year connection with the Lyngen Alps, which have become my second home. Together, we provide the experience, local knowledge and organisation needed for a safe, well-planned and unforgettable journey through this remarkable mountain landscape.

Lyngen på langs or the Haute Route?

Many people compare Lyngen på langs with the famous Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt. The two tours certainly share many similarities: multi-day ski traverses, mountain hut accommodation and the rewarding experience of crossing an entire mountain range under your own power.

However, the Lyngen Alps offer something quite different. This traverse is far more remote, quieter and much less frequented. It's not unusual to spend several days without encountering another group of ski tourers. That sense of solitude gives the journey a unique atmosphere and makes the experience especially authentic.

The physical demands are also different. While the Haute Route benefits from a dense network of mountain huts, cable cars and several exit options, Lyngen på langs is considerably more remote. With an average of around 1,700 metres of ascent and approximately 18.5 kilometres per day—sometimes significantly more—this traverse requires excellent fitness, confident ski touring skills and the ability to adapt to changing weather and snow conditions.

If you've already completed the Haute Route and are looking for a more remote, quieter and more demanding ski touring adventure, you'll love Lyngen på langs. It's not simply another route to tick off your list, but an expedition that will stay with you long after you've returned home.

Inquiry

To fully enjoy your ski touring week in the Lyngen Alps, you should meet the following requirements:

A confident parallel turn in all snow conditions, strong off-piste skiing skills in alpine terrain, and solid experience using ski touring equipment—including climbing skins, ski crampons and avalanche safety gear (transceiver, shovel and probe)—are essential. Depending on the conditions, some sections may require short-rope techniques or brief abseils.

The daily stages average around 1,700 metres of ascent and approximately 18.5 kilometres, with some days being considerably longer. Excellent physical fitness is therefore required, and you should be comfortable completing several long ski touring days in succession.
