Ski Touring in Norway's Hidden Arctic Paradise
Senja, Norway
Senja is located about three hours south of Tromsø, between Norway's two best-known ski touring regions—the Lyngen Alps and the Lofoten Islands. Despite this exceptional location, the island is often overlooked. Yet Senja combines dramatic fjord landscapes, rugged peaks and a remarkable variety of ski tours, all in a much quieter and less crowded setting than its famous neighbours.
In many ways, Senja lies somewhere between the Lyngen Alps and the Lofoten Islands. The island combines the diversity of Arctic mountain landscapes like few other places in Norway: gentle summits alternate with steep rock faces, wide open slopes descend towards narrow fjords, and breathtaking views of the open sea appear around almost every corner.
For many years, Senja remained a hidden gem among ski tourers—not because of a lack of great terrain, but because there were few accommodations designed with ski tourers in mind.
For many seasons, Hamn i Senja has been the perfect base for our ski touring weeks. Set right on the waterfront, this stylish lodge offers easy access to the island's finest ski tours. Its central location allows us to stay flexible each day, choosing the best objectives according to the weather, snow and avalanche conditions while making the most of everything Senja has to offer.

My Favourite Place to Stay on Senja
Hotel Hamn i Senja
During our ski touring week on Senja, we stay at Hamn i Senja, one of the finest accommodations in Northern Norway. We stay in comfortable waterfront apartments, each featuring two bedrooms and a spacious shared living room. Large windows offer stunning views of the harbour, the sea and the surrounding mountains.
I chose Hamn i Senja very deliberately. It combines modern comfort with a unique location right on the waterfront, making it the perfect base for exploring the island's best ski tours. At the same time, it offers the peaceful atmosphere you'll appreciate after a rewarding day in the mountains.
After each tour, we gather in the cosy living area to enjoy the harbour views, share the highlights of the day and plan the next adventure. Those looking to relax can unwind in the sauna or enjoy regional specialities in the hotel's excellent restaurant.
For me, a great ski touring week is about more than just outstanding skiing. It's also about staying somewhere you'll truly enjoy returning to each evening. That's exactly why Hamn i Senja is my accommodation of choice on Senja.

A confident parallel turn in a variety of snow conditions, the ability to ski comfortably in off-piste terrain up to around 35 degrees, and solid experience using ski touring equipment—including climbing skins, ski crampons and avalanche safety gear (transceiver, shovel and probe)—are essential.
Most ski tours on Senja involve between 900 and 1,100 metres of ascent. We keep a relaxed pace throughout the day and take plenty of breaks to enjoy the island's spectacular Arctic scenery.
For private bookings and custom groups, I'm happy to tailor the choice of tours, difficulty, pace and group size to match your experience, fitness level and personal preferences
