Hiking in the Lyngen Alps

The best way to land in Tromsø is by direct flight from Vienna or Munich, where your mountain guide will pick you up directly at the airport. We then reach our accommodation in Lyngseidet after a 2-hour journey.

This day hike from Lyngseidet leads to Rønestinden, a quiet, impressive peak with breathtaking views over fjords, glaciers and the sea. The ascent begins directly from the village through birch forest and mossy areas before the whole expanse of the Lyngen Alps opens up above the tree line.

The path is unmarked and unspoilt, which is precisely what makes it so attractive. Step by step, it leads up over rocky terrain, always accompanied by views of the deep blue Lyngenfjord. A 360° panorama awaits you at the top - from the peaks of the Lyngen Alps to the islands in the west.

The tour is moderately difficult and ideal for experienced hikers who are looking for the real Northern Norway experience: silence, vastness and the unspoilt power of nature.

At the northernmost point of the Lyngen Peninsula lies a special place: Lyngstuva, where the land ends and the sea begins. This easy to moderately difficult hike in the Lyngen Alps takes you through vast coastal landscapes, over soft mosses, small streams and wind-sculpted rocks - always accompanied by views of the open sea.

The trail starts in Russelv and climbs gently northwards. The further you walk, the wider the horizon opens up: the sea in front of you, the peaks of the Lyngen Alps behind you. The small Lyngstuva lighthouse awaits you at your destination, lonely and proud above the waves. Here you can feel the power of the north - wind, salt air and silence.

From the cliff, you have an impressive panoramic view of the sea, the fjords and the glaciers to the south. A place to pause, take photographs or simply savour the moment.

Steindalen is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Lyngen Alps - a place where you can feel the power of nature in every step. The hike begins at the end of the valley by the small bridge over the river and initially leads leisurely through sparse birch forest. The valley soon widens and the view opens up to snow-covered peaks, glacial moraines and glistening watercourses.

The path follows the former course of the glacier - here, where the ice has shaped the landscape for centuries. Over soft mossy areas and small stream crossings, we slowly approach the mighty Steindalsbreen, one of the most impressive glaciers in northern Norway.

The end of the glacier flows directly into a small lake. Huge walls of ice rise up, shimmering turquoise in the light. You can often hear the cracking of the ice and the rushing of the meltwater - an unforgettable experience of nature. There is time for a rest, to take photos or simply to marvel.

In the morning, we take the ferry from Lyngseidet to Olderdalen. Even the crossing is an experience: the light is reflected on the water and the rugged peaks of the Lyngen Peninsula rise up directly in front of us - a foretaste of what is to come.

From Olderdalen, we first head towards Djupvik by car. Our path initially leads uphill through birch forest and over soft mossy areas. The path climbs steadily, but never steeply, and soon the first views of the deep blue Lyngenfjord open up. The higher we get, the wider the view - of the mighty mountains opposite, glacier tongues and the sea in the background.

Storhaugen (1,142 m) rewards us with a magnificent panorama: the entire Lyngenfjord lies at our feet, the peaks of the Lyngen Alps glisten to the west and the view extends far into the tundra of Finnmark to the east. Hardly any other summit offers such a beautiful view of the wildest mountains of the Lyngen Alps.

The way back follows the same path - downhill with constantly changing perspectives of the fjord, light and sky. Back in Olderdalen, we enjoy a coffee before the ferry takes us back to Lyngseidet. A day full of peace, space and true Nordic beauty.

Our hike begins on the quiet shore of Jægervatn - where the water glistens in the light and the peaks of the Lyngen Alps are reflected in the lake. After just a few steps, the path leads out of the gentle shoreline landscape and into the wild mountain world.

Between clear streams, rocky slopes and wide expanses of moss, we find our way over small thresholds and old moraines. The passage through Russedalen is lonely and impressive - a hidden valley, framed by rugged peaks, where nature belongs entirely to itself.

At the top of the gentle pass, the view opens up back over the valley lakes and out to the sea. Then the descent to Fastdalen begins, past clear streams and soft cushions of moss. After hours of silence, we reach the Fastdalshytta where we take another break. Finally we return to civilisation - a return to the outside world after a day in the heart of the Lyngen Alps.

The tour starts in the small village of Furuflaten, at the entrance to the expansive Lyngsdalen valley. Along the river, framed by steep peaks and green slopes - a classic image of the Lyngen Alps. The path initially leads flat into the valley, along the water and past old birch trees and soft mossy areas.

Slowly we climb higher, leaving the valley floor behind us and gaining height on wide, open plateaus. The landscape becomes more barren, quieter and wider. Over gentle hills, past small lakes, our path leads northwards. There is no marked path to guide us - just a sense of the landscape and the wind that blows across the plateau.

After a shallow depression, the descent into Kvalvikdalen begins - a remote, quiet valley surrounded by dark rocks and criss-crossed by small streams. The stage ends here, where the mountains come closer again and nature radiates its wild tranquillity.

This hike allows you to experience the true character of the Lyngen Alps: vastness, solitude and an untamed beauty that can only be felt on foot.
